Topic 1 :Interview of Sarah Weldon, who has sent a postcard to us.
To know more about her: http://www.oceansproject.com/sarah-weldon.html
Topic 2: Everyone should go beyond his or her own limits.
One of our students in 2nde (= year 11 in UK/ 10th grade in U.S.A) wrote:
If someone asked me my opinion about 'everyone should go beyond his or her limits.' I would tell them: 'what is life without risks?' To accomplish our dreams we must go further our limits. It is important to prove to the world and to yourself what you are capable of.
When you take this decision to go beyond your limits, you are alone facing the risks of the world. To go beyond your limits, you must fight your fears. There are many ways to go beyond your limits. The easiest way is to be determined.
Topic 3: What are the biggest difficulties in life?
A student in 2nde: My everyday life difficulties are the injustices of the world.
Another student : My biggest difficulty in life is to not lose faith in what I believe. I am afraid to lose people I love; that fear remains difficult to fight.
I struggle to never give up my dreams, but I always say to myself life is beautiful and that everything will be ok.
Topic 4: Who is your hero/ are your heroes?
One year ago, it was asked to students to write fictitious stories about their heroes.
Here is a selection of the best papers we have read.
Enjoy reading !
A Lesson of Humility
Written by T.D.
One of the most respected peace makers once said:
"I claim to be a simple individual liable to err like any other fellow mortal. I own, however, that I have humility enough to confess my errors and to retrace my steps."
I used to have many conflicts with my teachers until... Until one striking event in my life. I would even say more : until Mr M. -it is not the initial of a real name of course but a fictitious one-...
Mr M. was one of my teachers and I could tell he tried so hard to obtain discipline with his students... Yelling, extra homework, detentions, calls to parents, a whole range of ways to get discipline.
The problem was no mattered what he tried, that had never worked on me, the rebel.
Well, I barely attended school and played truant most of the time. Whenever I decided to go to school it was to chat with my friends or show to my teachers that i was more superior than them. The most intelligent teenager on earth? That was me, no doubt... In my mind.
Whenever I disageeed with my teachers, i would let them know and for sure not in the easiest way. It was indeed very conflictual.
Then, something heavy happened in my life : my dad died in a car crash. My dad : my hero. And now he would never ever tell me again: " Do your homework, listen to your teachers. For hell sake, do you think I am going to be there for you every time you have a call from your school ? I have got a job! And i spend enough time at the office to deserve some rest when i go home!"
And now, he would rest for ever. Although our talks were often conflictual, I miss him so much. A rebel mustn't cry when in public but hides his wounds.
I happened to finally decide to go to school to respect what my dad wanted me to do.
Surprisingly enough, that was when Mr M. made me like school, with his strong will and the strong belief he had in students' improvement.
The loss of my dad has taught me to me more humble. I will never be able to thank him for all he did for me, as he is dead now. The worst loss and the most striking, saddest event in my life.
Now I understand why both my dad and Mr M. were so harsh : they wanted me to succeed in my life. They have taught me humility, so they are my heroes.
As my dad would say if he were still alive : life is a long lesson on humility.
